U&I Software's MetaSynth is a program like no other. It is a (non-realtime) virtual synthesizer, multi-timbral sample player, sequencer and sound design environment rolled into one.
Requirements
Macintosh PowerPC running System 7 or later with 64 megabytes or more of RAM. Realtime preview may be limited on computers equipped with slow CPUs.
Getting Started
Because MetaSynth is such a different take on music and sound creation, it is worth taking a look at the documentation we have provided. The documentation requires Adobe Acrobat Reader which is available at most popular shareware sites.
If you want to jump right in, follow the instructions in the Self-Tour section of the QuickStart.pdf file. The Self-Tour gives you a chance to hear a broad range of the kinds of sounds you can synthesize with MetaSynth. The rest of the QuickStart guide is devoted to tutorials which give you a feel for MetaSynth's rather extensive set of tools. The Overview.pdf describes how MetaSynth works and how the different windows relate to each other. You will also probably want to play each of the default MetaSynthDemo.presets to hear some more of the incredible types of sounds you can create.
This demo version allows a limited number of launches and does not allow you to save files. Information about purchasing MetaSynth is provided below.
The MetaSynth Package
The full MetaSynth package includes a printed manual and a CD that contains hundreds of megabytes of useful files.
Included on the CD are:
1/ Preset & Filter Libraries - The CD contains several hundred useful preset and filter libraries that provide examples of MetaSynth's capabilities and can be used as starting points when creating your own sounds. These files demonstrate how MetaSynth can be used to create: techno music, neo-classical music, sound effects, micro tonal music and more.
2/ Instrument Library - Contains a large library (over 200 megabytes) of high-quality multi-sample MetaSynth instruments and preset libraries which use them. The CD features a full set of acoustic instruments with high quality violin and cello samples, a series of killer ambient pads, a stereo techno drum set, the best stereo strings orchestra you will ever find and much more...
3/ Waves & Procedural Synth - Contains useful data files for use with the Wave Table Palette, Procedural Synth and the Envelope Editors.
4/ Custom Scales library - Contains thousands of custom scales for use in MetaSynth. These scales cover everything from traditional scales and tunings from around the world to experimental mathematically derived scales.
5/ Spectrums - Contains spectrum files that can be used to create input sources for the Image Synth.
6/ Input Samples - Contains sound files that are useful as Image Synth input sources.
7/ An excellent and complete printed manual that will help you to discover the incredible power of MetaSynth.
8/ Tutorials that help you get the most out of MetaSynth including advanced techniques for creating really warped sounds!
